Post Natal Assessment

Post Natal Assessment

Post Natal AssessmentApollo Physiotherapy offers a comprehensive post-natal assessment to identify any muscle imbalances and postural weaknesses that can occur during your pregnancy. We aim to optimise your post-natal recovery through treating any biomechanical dysfunctions and providing a specific post-natal exercise programme that will see you back to your pre-baby fitness levels.

A Post-Natal Assessment at Apollo Physiotherapy will involve:

Postural Assessment

Your posture changes during pregnancy. These postural changes may lead to muscle imbalances such as an increased lordosis (arch) in the lower back, weak gluteal (buttock) muscles, and weak abdominal muscles. A postural assessment will identify these muscle imbalances and allow for a specific targeted exercise programme to be tailored to your needs.

Pelvic Alignment

An assessment of the pelvic girdle will identify any biomechanical dysfunction which may be a source of pain or discomfort that may impede you returning to exercise in the post-natal period. We can treat these biomechanical dysfunctions with manual therapy techniques to relieve pain and restore normal function.

Pelvic Floor Assessment

The pelvic floor muscles undergo changes during pregnancy and can experience trauma during delivery. A pelvic floor assessment can identify any pelvic floor dysfunctions and treatment will focus on restoring normal function of the pelvic floor muscles.

Diastasis Recti Abdominus Assessment

The connective tissue in the midline of your abdominal muscles may separate during pregnancy. This can have long-term implications with respect to pelvic and trunk stability,  and has been linked to back pain, pelvic organ prolapse and pelvic floor dysfunction. We will assess your abdominal muscles and, through manual therapy and muscle re-education, we aim to optimise the function of the abdominal wall post-natally, thereby ensuring a safe return to exercise.
